the in-betweenness of a lifetime

Gab Branco, Júlia Iwanaga & Steef Kersbergen

the in-betweenness of a lifetime

The in-betweenness is evoked as the crossroad of the three researches, taking it as a space of transgression and escape, according to each one of them, from the binary and colonial system. The video installation brings the perspective of non-linear and spiral time as a guiding wire, instigating the physical perception of those watching.

G A B • B R A N C O, is a Brazilian feminist artist, dance diffuser and activist immigrant living in between Germany and The Netherlands. Throughout the last years she's been working on multiple roles as director, dramaturg, choreographer, performer, researcher, cultural producer, KVT teacher and mentor for young makers. In her artistic and theoretical works, she is driven to approach the subversion of the TRIAD: Colonization, Capitalism, and White Supremacy, as she has been defining in her actual Master thesis on the FISSURE practice. She is constantly questioning socio-political issues and the impact of Western Culture through an anti-colonialist, and autoethnographic perspectives, embracing the marginalized gazes to immerse herself in a critical analysis in her creations.

JÚLIA IWANAGA

Júlia Iwanaga is a Brazilian dance researcher-creator, performer, artist educator and cultural producer based in Sao Paulo. She holds a BA (2017) and a BAT (2018) in Dance from UNICAMP (Brazil), a post-graduation in performance studies (2020) from PReS (Germany), and is currently attending post-graduation in Cultural Project and Program Management (2023) at Senac Lapa Scipião (Brazil). She develops her research in an in-between perspective and in non-disciplinary contexts, addressing questions about the deconstruction of identity as a Japanese-Brazilian woman.

STEEF KERSBERGEN is a nonbinary performance artist working on the border between live and video work. Their projects focus on the (De-/Re-)construction of the nonbinary identity through image making. Temporality and slowness are key entry-points into their work, rooted in the belief that no identity is static or fixed and time is a non-linear and fluid concept. Rooted in an auto-ethnographic approach, Steef uses their work as a way of visually addressing societal issues around trans*gender identities.

They also have a background in education and community-arts, and run a theatre company called tg Signum where they work with Deaf and hard-of-hearing actors, combining Sign language and spoken language. In all of their work there is a strong undertone of empowerment, queerness and embracing otherness.

Steef is a proud alumni of the Bachelor of Theatre and Education at ArtEZ Arnhem, where they now also supervise internships in education.
